There is a sense in which each opportunity to counsel, coach, instruct, model, or teach future pastors, e.g., in a seminary course, is a vital contribution to “spiritual apostolic succession.” The following video was made with a deep sense of prayer and no slight spiritual longing to send Christian shepherds into a generation that I will never see. In this graduation season – including seminary graduation — I offer these personal thoughts from “A Closing Word” to encourage aging pastors to stretch forward with all of their might and hand off the biblical baton of faithful ministry to the next generation of Christian shepherds.
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:9 NKJV
Dr. Milton what a beautiful course ending! I have grown in this time that we have shared with you academically and spiritually ! You have such awe, peace and compassion for the way that you have taught this course. At first , I felt like I was not going to make it. But your continual prayers, inspiring music and compassion for God’s people gave me so much enthusiasm and hope! Thank you for equipping me academically to move further in the direction that God has destined for me! You are an amazing Professor and I look forward to the next class! Peace and blessings to you and your family.
Dr. Milton,
I have never seen such a demonstration of humility and grace as I have through your instruction to us. It is us, your students, that are blessed beyond measure. Like Rhonda stated, I was not certain that I was ready for this class, but your continual encouragement helped me to continue. You truly have a pastor’s heart. My prayer is for your continual blessing. I will never forget this class or you. Thank you for such a wonderful time of learning and growing.
My Dearest Chaplain,
I am so moved by your words, and, perhaps, more so by the sacrifice of time to write. It means more than you could ever know.
Thank you for your ministry to our troops, to those in need. Your works are not in vain. You walk the ‘tight wire,” despite the demands blowing in from all sides—your pursuit of our Lord in your own life, your attendance to your dear family, your integrity to your work, your spiritual care of the Armed Forces, and continuing education— With grace and dedication, you are walking forward, and by God’s strength, will not only reach the other side but will bring many souls won to Christ with you.
This is why it is my honor to teach and learn with those who give their lives for others, and the glory of God.
