I was saved by God’s gift of repentance and faith, uttered in surrender to the resurrected and reigning Lord Jesus Christ. The doctrine of God’s sovereignty in salvation became the immediate wonder of wonders for me. “So, you are telling me that you fully understood this of all the difficult doctrines of Scripture?” No. I believed it. When I heard Dr. D. James Kennedy preach the glory of God in salvation, I was suddenly aware that my pain, loss, and visceral isolation of what Walk Percy called “Lost in the Cosmos” was not unbeknown to the Almighty. He was there, transforming every sin, every perpetration of evil, even the “accidental” trials resulting from living in a fallen world.
I went home from that Evangelism Explosion conference, and I wrote this song.
Ask God to enable you to repent and believe in the Gospel: by the grace of a loving God, The Lord sent His Son to save you. Confess with your mouth the truth in your heart that God the Son Jesus Christ lived the life you could not live and died the death of atonement for your sins. He promises that you will abide in God and God in you in His Word. Your life will never be the same again, and the things that hurt you miraculously are transformed into the things that save you by causing you to come to this decisive moment in your life. When you see that nothing else can cure, nothing else can help, no one else can provide the new life you long for, that is the time when only the Lord will do. Is that time now? I invite you to pray these words out loud:
Our Father, You sent Your only-begotten Son to save us, by becoming Man without ever ceasing to be God; and In Your love and grace, You sent the Holy Spirit to bring me to this place; Without any merit to offer you, I come to You just as I am; I ask that You empower me by Your Spirit to receive Your gift of eternal life as I now transfer trust from self—from trusting religion, or spirituality, or even hoping that acts of faithless goodness will please You—to the Lord Jesus Christ—totally, unreservedly; So, come into my life, Lord Jesus, and grant Your power to follow You all of the days of this life that You have given. Guide me to open my heart, my life, and my give me Your Word to tell of Your love to others; Grant that I may grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ through prayer, Scripture, worship, and fellowship with other believers. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
