Entropy in the Christian Life

Entropy is the way of the world. Entropy is the inescapable and steady decay of all things in the universe unless there is intervention. Renewal is not automatic nor inevitable. Entropy is.

Unless given water, plants die. Unless touched, babies become ill. Unless practiced, proficiency in music, athletics, or even manners will suffer or be lost.

The Bible teaches that entropy can afflict the Christian life, as well.

“ But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4 ESV).

Christians can lose their first love in a variety of ways: unwillingness to address secret sins, inattentiveness to daily devotions, disinterest in pursuing the Spirit of the Lord in prayer, lack of concern for the lost, a loss of urgency in living for God, and all of these symptoms of spiritual pathology presenting themselves from a lack of relationship with the Savior, and growing appreciation for the grace of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Our recovery—our healing, for this is spiritual sickness unto death—is through repentance and faith and a return to the daily disciplines of the Christian life that bring us into the presence of our sweet Savior.
