A Prayer for the City of Light in this Present Darkness

The Sainte-Chapelle is a royal medieval Gothic chapel, located near the Palais de la Cité, on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris. The structure was consecrated as a place of Christian worship on 26 April 1248.

Oh everlasting God our Father, who sent Thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ to live the life we could not live and die the death that should have been ours, we come to Thee for Thy Spirit to bring a new illumination to the City of Lights, the City of Paris, and to the hurting people of France, so that as Saint Denis preached the Gospel to the Gauls and the Franks in times past and many heard and believed, so, again, many will, now, come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior, finding in Him their souls’ healing, their minds’ peace and an existential safety that not only transcends this world, but transforms this world; for once more, we are all stunned—yes, we are in some sense terrorized—for we are like bewildered children in a garden of beasts, as we have witnessed the carnage of young and old in one of the most beautiful cities on earth by fellow humans who have turned into blood-thirsty savages; and, so, Lord, where shall we turn, but to Thee?

So, coming unto Thy throne of grace, and pleading the cleansing blood of Jesus that forgives our sins—and our enemies’ sins—we ask for holy perseverance to carry out our duty so that generations yet born may live free, moral courage for duly appointed civil authorities to bear the sword of state to punish evildoers for righteousness’ sake, and for unswerving faith in Thee as the Vindicator of the just in this ancient struggle of light against darkness; therefore, we do, once more, pray; and we pray believing for good, for we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, the true Light of the World. Amen.
