Today the International Congress on Preaching adjourned with the preaching of The Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith of Oakland, California delivering a stirring messages on “A Changeless Christ for a Changing Culture.” Based on Hebrews 12.8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever” Dr. Smith called preachers to stand strong in the truth of Christ. Before Dr. Smith, The Rev. Dr. John Huffman preached a very touching message on Jesus’ ministry to both the woman with the issue of blood and Jairus’ daughter (from Mark 5). Dr. Huffman brought comfort to the caregiver and called us to also see that we as pastors are called to see the hidden but very real ministry that often comes to us within the presenting ministry.
As we sang “How Great Thou Art” the organ swelled, the large crowd sang as unto the Lord, and the very roof of St. Andrew’s Church in Cambridge seemed ready to give in! It was glorious and majestic praise to God!
I am leaving this conference having preached, sang and played guitar, taught at Emmanuel College (a great treat to teach in the Upper Hall of Emmanuel), and thus am leaving a bit tired. But I am leaving with a renewed sense of calling. And I am leaving with some new friends that I think are friends for life.
All glory be to You Lord Christ!
