Christmas Eve Order and Bulletin Sample

Christmas Eve worship is one of the most beautiful and inspiring times in the life of a congregation and in the ministry of a pastor. The service may be seen by the pastor as challenging because everyone knows that you are going to say something about Christ‘s birth. Yet I would submit to you that the very reason that it might be seen as challenging is the very reason that it is a grand opportunity for fresh, creative, and faithful Bible preaching. For within the larger Scriptural theme of the Incarnation many particulars about the birth of Jesus can be and need to be said. The Gospel can go forth powerfully in these times. I am praying now for pastors and people, and for our nation, that as Christmas descends upon us like a new snow, the pure white Gospel of Jesus Christ may be fresh and new to our minds and hearts. I offer an example of a Christmas Eve Service prepared for a modified Lessons and Carols (King’s College, Cambridge) and amended for a “Candlelight Communion Service.”

The families will soon be gathering in, dear friends! The children will be squirming, the in-laws looking to see where their children now worship, the soloist jittery as she prepares for that first note of “Once in Royal David’s City,” and you, taking it all in, like a happy father as you watch your family gather for a holiday meal. Savor the moment, beloved pastor. It is Christmas Eve.

May the Lord glorify Himself and bring joy to you in this time.
